Does the Lasik Procedure Cause a Loss in “Near” vision?
Yankee announcer Bobby Murcer was talking about ball players getting Lasik vision correction surgery and said that “After Lasik, you become farsighted and lose your nearsighted vision.” Is this statement true or is this a fallacy?According to Dr. Chynn, this is a very common fallacy and not to be given any credit. What the announcer was saying in essence is that with a full laser vision correction procedure of both eyes, by the age of 45 up close reading vision will be lost. The truth is that around that age, almost everyone becomes “presbyopic” (not farsighted as many people think the correct term). This happens naturally as part of the aging process for most individuals. For anyone around the age of 40, Dr. Chynn will do a Monovision correction procedure, leaving the non-dominant eye nearsighted so that they can read without glasses until about 60 years old. That’s the real story behind the myth.
