LASIK Patients Ask Dr. Chynn PRK Questions
Dr. Chynn,
I am coming to New York in March and had in LASIK 2004. My question is, could I have PRK or non-laser LASIK. I had thin cornea 502/499 before surgery.

Dear Tatu
You have sent me the most well-informed email query out of the last 1000 probably. Are you in the medical field yourself, or are you just a very smart patient who has done your homework?
You are absolutely correct that I could enhance both of your eyes, as I would perform the more advanced surface ablation LASEK on top of your prior LASIKs, so I would not have to re-lift the old flaps, or cut new flaps, both of which can be problematic.
Lasering the old flap also makes it much safer because we are not taking off any more tissue providing structural stability to you eye, since the flap is just like a cap sitting on your head, it provides almost 0 strength to the eyewall.
This is very different than lasering further into your eyes with a LASIK enhancement, which would be unable to be performed in your left eye, anyway (the right eye might have enough tissue to perform a 2nd LASIK, but I would not recommend that if these were my eyes).
Therefore, please CALL my office to schedule all the logistics involved. Please do not try to do this only by email, as that never works out well in terms of how my staff functions. I am sorry about the time difference, and long distance charges, but you really must call us.
I am attaching some helpful literature about our practice and staff so you will know which staff member can help you with each subject.
You will have to bring your glasses, stop wearing contacts if you are now (I don’t think you are), start taking artificial tears, and read carefully your pre and postop directions (they will email them to you after you call).
I have performed more LASEK enhancements over prior LASIKs than any other surgeon in New York City, so you are definitely coming to the right place (but it looks like you already know this, based on your research)!
Yours,
