Dr. Chynn Explains LASEK Procedure to Patients
Hi nicole and friends,
looking forward to making you see well without glasses or contacts, nicole!:)
as you know, but your friends may not, your Rx of -9.00 going in is about 3x worse than most of their Rxs, and 3x worse than legally blind, which people are at around -3.00
the only way you could even have this surgery done is by having our newer, safer, noncutting LASEK procedure, because by not cutting a flap like in the older LASIK (like I had 10 years ago), we are saving corneal tissue, allowing us to treat higher Rxs like yours safely
to further explain this, i need to take off about 10 microns per diopter of Rx for standard, and 15 microns per diopter for CustomVue. a standard LASIK flap is about 100-150 microns thick, meaning by not cutting a flap, we have enough tissue to treat up to -10.00
in effect, by avoiding a flap in you, nicole, we will laser the area the flap would have been in, so your cornea will be as thick and strong as if i performed a LASIK in you, cut a flap, and then didn’t laser you at all (which would correct 0 of your Rx)
i hope i’m making this clear for everyone–if you or your friends have any ? about this (or their particular situation or concerns about their eyes), they can just email me and if they want to watch a live procedure, they can rsvp for our live laser seminars jun 20 or 27 (or maybe watch yours)
looking forward to fixing your eyes, nicole, the high Rx patients are among our happiest (for obvious reasons), and maybe i’ll laser some of your friends down the road!:)
yours,
Emil William Chynn, MD FACS MBA

Hi, Dr. Chynn,
I am actually one of Nicole’s childhood friends from elementary school through high school and i am very interested in learning more about the Lasik procedure. Similarly, I have a prescription of -8.00 -1.25 x040 (L) / -8.00 -1.25 x130 (R). I have suffered all my life with terrible vision and many types of contacts. Would the surgury be something that would work in my case do you think? I am away most of June, but I was hoping I might be able to come in for a consultation in early july. Is this possible?
Thank you for looking into my case,
Adrienne Nagy

Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for writing to me; that’s why we do this thing where patients of ours email their friends, as then they can get a conversation with me going about their eyes:) Yes, I can definitely fix your eyes, no problem. Your Rx is just a bit worse than mine was before my own surgery 10 years ago, and actually less than your friend Nicole’s. You also have astigmatism, just like both me and Nicole. At your level of astigmatism, you would probably need toric contacts, which are a bit thick, rotate, and thus often give fluctuating vision and are a bit uncomfortable, which sounds like what you have experienced in the past (again, just like me before my own surgery).
Fortunately, with the more advanced, non-cutting procedure I’m doing, I can safely treat your level of both myopia and astigmatism. Believe it or not, I can actually treat patients whose Rx is almost TWICE yours (I know, it’s hard to imagine anyone that bad, but we treat this all the time).
Please call my office # below to schedule your free consultation in July. You can also attend one of our upcoming live laser seminars this Jun. 20 and 27th, where you can watch me perform a procedure and have all your questions answered, if you happen to be in town.
Congratulations on taking the 1st step of ridding yourself of the hassle of glasses and contacts forever!:) Once you come in, we hope to give you all the information you need to feel comfortable in making whatever decision is best for you.
Looking forward to hearing from you this week, and seeing you sometime soon, either later this month or in July!
Yours,
Emil William Chynn, MD FACS MBA
