Dr. Chynn will now perform laser eye surgery on dogs!

Emil Chynn, MD owner of www.ParkAvenuelaser.com has had his dog volunteer in St. Vincent Hospital’s Pet Therapy program for years, the 1st Pet Therapy Program in NYC. As such, he has also examined many of the other dogs in the pet therapy program, and found many to be misdiagnosed with cataracts, when they actually had some other eye problem.

Most vets cannot properly diagnose eye conditions, as they lack both the training and proper equipment. Dr. Chynn has both! Dr. Chynn noted that some dogs who did not see well actually have a refractive error, meaning they are nearsighted or farsighted.  He can objectively diagnose this with an autorefractor, provided the dog is well-behaved.  He noticed that dogs’ refractive status depends largely on breed, depending on their original functions they were bred for.

For example, pointers and retrievers, because of their duties, are often slightly hyperopic, or farsighted.  In contracst, terriers are commonly slightly nearsighted.

Dr. Chynn would like to be the 1st laser surgeon in the US to perform laser vision correction on a dog, who is significantly nearsighted or farsighted, and does not have cataracts. This would be done in conjunction with a vet, who would provide light sedation.

If you think your well-behaved dog may be nearsighted but not have cataracts (a young dog who can’t follow a thrown object in the distance) please call Dr. Chynn’s office at 212- 741-8628 to have your dog examined. The exam only costs $100, which offsets the expense of sterilizing all equipment afterwards, and can be conducted only at the end of the day, for this reason.

If your dog needs laser eye surgery, it will be performed at regular cost but we will probably be able to get some funds for this from various animal groups, with the right amount of PR effort!

Thanks for helping us let our best friends see the way they were meant to!

Dr. Chynn’s dog, Hershey, is having a Birthday Party that is also a Block Party, Sat. Sep. 20th in the West Village–call the office for details if you would like to attend!:)
